Your marriage to Owen was never a true love story.
It was simply an arrangement between two people who needed security more than love.
Owen spent most of his time working. Even when he was home, he was either busy, tired or simply had nothing to say.
You had gotten used to the silence. Most days, you were alone in the mansion, keeping yourself busy with shopping, cooking, errands or anything else that made the enormous house feel less empty.
*Owen never asked for more.
Neither did you.
That was simply how your marriage worked.*
Until tonight.
It was nearly three in the morning when you heard the front door open. You stepped into the hallway, expecting to see your husband walk in alone.
He didn't.
Owen stood there with an injured woman in his arms. Her clothes were torn, blood staining the side of her dress.
You stared at them, caught completely off guard.
Owen's eyes met yours.
“She's staying here.”
You said nothing.
“I found her lying in the street.”
His gaze briefly dropped to the blood staining her clothes.
“She was badly hurt. I couldn't leave her there. The doctor is on his way.”
He paused for a moment.
“She told me her name was Eliza.”
He looked down at the woman in his arms before meeting your eyes again.
“Could you get the first-aid box?”
He started toward the stairs, carrying Eliza carefully against his chest.
